On Feb 27, Ferrari presented its fall/winter 2022-23 collection, with a mixed women’s and men’s runway as part of the Milan Fashion Week. The collection was designed by the brand’s creative director Rocco Iannone, who wants to tell “the story of speed”, a brand tagline, and an expression of the innovation required due to the ongoing changes in society past-pandemic.
In the new collection, jackets and coats are cut and sewn with tailoring techniques, showing the inside stitches on the outside. The clothes have contoured shoulders that are not overly padded, defined by stitching and flat-felled seams. The skirts are pencil-shaped, mostly decorated with adjustable metal-zippered slits, which give a flexible effect. The little black dress is made of new material like leather treated with finishes that affects the shape, and gives volume toward the hem. Trousers are designed with pleats in a tapered style to fit different occasions no matter formal or casual. Long coats in cashmere, leather and shearling feature zip details, bomber jackets and tweed tops are made with layers of nylon, leather and cotton yarn.
Also, the collection includes soft loose-fitting shirts, leather puffer jackets, hooded sweatshirts and silk skirts.
Some natural fabrics such as wool, cashmere, cotton drill, silk and leather derived from food waste, have been used in the collection after technological treatment: leather is thermoformed; cotton drill is enriched with a waterproof technical fiber; brass is galvanized; and nylon becomes reflective.
All the materials used in the collection are environment-friendly and socially sustainable, such as organic cotton, GRS-certified recycled nylon, and Ecodown padding inside the jackets, a material obtained from recycled plastic bottles.
Iannone claims the collection shows “narrative connections” between speed and technology, light and surface, the idea of the future and its inevitable realization that runs through the entire collection, with hybridization of materials and shapes. On the other hand, it highlights the need to think outside the box and to be open to diversity in order to drive the evolution of the brand and our times.
“There is no doubt that each and every fashion collection is a creative intervention that describes a point of view on the aesthetics of modernity. Just as there is no doubt that fashion knows how to capture and transfer modernity into clothes at the moment of its formation. This is why, wanting to take not only the beauty but also the turbulence, tensions and rapidity that give rise to the changes in our contemporary world and synthesis and transfer them into a fashion collection, it seemed coherent to me to use the concept of speed. Which, moreover, is an essential element of Ferrari’s brand narrative and which, at the same time, describes the rapidity of social and creative changes in recent years,” he says.
The Ferrari fashion collection is based on the same values that have driven 75 years of the company’s history: innovation, style and performance, enriched by Italian craftsmanship that guided all the clothes in terms of creativity and production, according to the company.
By studying the brand’s history, Iannone found that Ferrari is a system in which aesthetic research is never separated from the ethics expressed in its history and values.
“This is precisely what has given rise to its legend, which, over the years, has become an icon of Italian style, design and technological research in a world that is constantly changing. This explains why Ferrari also manages to encapsulate that Italian ability to transform creativity, any creativity, into a project,” he says.
Iannone designed silhouettes with clean-cut lines, fused tailoring techniques and materials with a technological touch. He incorporated the idea of speed and luminosity in jacquards made with glow-in-the-dark yarns and graphic prints created by breaking down and enlarging iconic images of the brand.
Finally the designer created a collection for women and men that embraces the tensions of urbanity, as well as the sensuality of bodies, while the clothes abandon gender label. It embraces the shapes and needs of women and men, who, through the renewal and updating of their values to the present, play a leading role in the changes taking place.
